Robert Walter Thomas, affectionately known to many as “Bob,” passed away at the UH-Geauga Hospital on August 21, 2025, at the age of 64. A devoted husband, loving stepfather, grandfather, and cherished friend to many, Bob leaves behind a legacy of service, leadership, and deep fraternal bonds.
Born in Claridon, Ohio (Geauga County), on November 16, 1960, Bob was the beloved son of Walter Garfield Thomas and Marjorie Rose (Sedivy) Thomas. From an early age, Bob was known for his thoughtful nature, sharp intellect, and strong moral compass—qualities that would define his life and leadership in the years to come. Bob earned a Bachelor of Science degree in History from Hiram College, a subject that reflected his love for learning and understanding the world. On June 1, 2003, he married the love of his life, Donna L. (Robertson) Thomas. Together, they built a home filled with laughter, mutual respect, and lasting memories.
Bob’s life was marked by exceptional dedication to Freemasonry. A deeply respected and active member of the Masonic fraternity, he was known across Ohio and beyond for his tireless service and steady leadership. He served with distinction as Grand High Priest (2012-2013) and was, at the time of his passing, the Grand Secretary of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Ohio. He faithfully served as Secretary for the Valley of Cleveland (2019-2024), Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite (AASR). Bob was honored to be Eminent Prior of Ohio Priory #18 Knights of the York Cross of Honor in 2018, a position that his father-in-law Robert had also served in. In recognition of his outstanding service and character, Bob was knighted a Knight of the York Grand Cross of Honor and was coronated a 33° Mason in the Valley of Cleveland—both among the highest honors in Freemasonry. His influence and contributions spanned nearly every Masonic body recognized in Ohio. In each, he left a mark of humility, excellence, and true brotherhood.
To know Bob was to know a man of integrity, wisdom, and compassion. Whether offering guidance to fellow Masons, telling stories with friends, or spending quiet moments with his family, Bob exuded warmth and kindness. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of calling him a brother, mentor, or friend.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Donna; his stepdaughters Rebecca Ferguson (and her cherished “grandpuppies” Lilly and Sir Hiccup) and Rachel Elliott (Sam); his grandchildren Nathan Elliott and Miranda Elliott; and his beloved cat, Louie. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Marilyn Robertson; brothers-in-law Robert Robertson, Jr. (Melodie), Andrew Robertson (Audra), Edward Robertson (Cas), and Thomas Robertson (Sarah); sister-in-law Cindy Hubright (James); along with many nieces, nephews, dear cousins.
Bob held a special place in his heart for the close friends who became family over the years, including his “drill dancing partner” Gary & Tracey Best, John & Diane Nelson, Walt & Jenna Johnston, Thomas Johnson, Darrell Reed, and Ryan & Cathy Adams.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Garfield Thomas and Marjorie Rose (Sedivy) Thomas; his father-in-law, Robert Robertson, Sr.
In his final act of generosity, Bob was an organ donor—an act that has already benefited numerous individuals and families, continuing his legacy of service even in passing.
