Mary A. Cavanaugh Obituary

Mary A. Cavanaugh (nee Schwertley), 95, formerly of North Royalton and Fairview Park, OH, passed away peacefully on March 3rd, 2024, at Ohman Family Living in Middlefield, OH.  She was born in Omaha, NE, on October 15th, 1928, to the late Cyril and Alice (Bennett) Schwertley and grew up in Chicago, IL, where she met and married her late husband, Raymond Thomas, before moving to Cleveland in the late 1960’s.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband; her son, Paul; her sister, Jane Marfise; and her loving companion of 25+ years, John J. Nodge.

Mary had previously worked at Higbee’s Westgate and Lakewood Hospital before retiring in the 1980’s.  Mary loved to go fishing, and took several vacations in her retirement, including a Mediterranean cruise where she and John went to the Vatican and saw the late Pope John Paul II speak to a crowd.  She was an avid card player, playing Rummy, Hearts, and other games with her loved ones, especially her grandchildren.  Mary would take daily trips to Marc’s in Parma with John to have coffee with their friends, but not before playing a game of Hearts to see who’s turn it was to buy.  Even after his death, Mary continued to visit their friends at Marc’s until she came to Middlefield in 2021.  Mary enjoyed taking trips to the Cleveland Zoo to see all of the animals.  She was an avid Cleveland Guardians/Chicago Cubs fan for decades and went to lots of games both in Chicago and in Cleveland.  Mary was thankful that she got to witness not only a Tribe World Series in 1948, but the Cubs ending their 108-year-old drought in 2016. Her children and grandchildren also shared their passion with her as Ohio State fans, with a few being proud alumni.

Mary will be greatly missed by her children, Laura (Bob) Long of Columbus, OH, Dave (Bonnie) Cavanaugh of Middlefield, OH, Mike (Gina) Cavanaugh of Glenwood Springs, CO; 7 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to the Cleveland Zoo Society, Cleveland Guardians Charities, or your local Humane Society.
