Kathleen (King) Martin

Katie Martin (nee King), age 88, of Moreland Hills and Lakeside, died peacefully at Arden Courts memory care home on December 27, 2024 after an extended struggle with Alzheimers. She will be remembered for many things but most of all as a sweet and kind person but with a steely resolve to stand up for what she believed was right.

Born on November 10, 1936 to Margaret and Arthur R “Reg” King, Katie attended Cleveland Heights High where she was a member of the Choir which traveled to 10 countries in Europe on a goodwill tour in 1953, and Flora Stone Mather (became Western Reserve) where she was President of her freshman class. Katie married her high school sweetheart, Jonathan Martin, in April 1959 while he was on leave from the Air Force. Together they raised 3 boys in Cleveland Heights and later in Moreland Hills, spending part of each summer at their beloved cottage in Lakeside. By 1990 Katie was an empty nester and decided to see if “her brains were still working” by pursuing an interior design curriculum at Tri-C graduating Summa Cum Laude. She was also active in the volunteer area with leadership positions on various organizations in Lakeside and Moreland Hills culminating in her Presidency of the Moreland Hills Historical Society for over 20 years. For these efforts she was awarded meritorious achievement certificates from both Moreland Hills and the State of Ohio.

Katie was predeceased by her parents, Arthur R King and Margaret Bolich King, brother James King and sister Patricia King Munn. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Jonathan Martin, and 3 sons, Jeffrey, Daniel (Yasmina) and Alex; grandchildren Jonah (Amy), Mathew, Jessica Caster (Ross), Elizabeth and Zachary and cherished great grandchildren; Mabel Zara Martin and Forrest Robert Caster and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and their children. Katie is also survived by Edward (Jane) Martin (brother-in-law) and Sally Martin (sister-in-law). Burial in Sackett cemetery (Danbury Twp) will be private. There will be a farewell gathering at the Unitarian Church in late February and a celebration of life service in Lakeside in late May. In lieu of flowers family suggests contributions to Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Cleveland in Shaker Heights or Lakeside Heritage Society.
