Mary Suzanne Fenton Obituary

Mary Suzanne Fenton (nee Hawk), 72, of North Bloomfield, was a wife, mother, and teacher who spent her entire life putting everyone else before herself. Her passing, on Fri., Sept. 21, 2018, at Trumbull Memorial after lung biopsy complications was shocking and has left a void in her family that can never be filled. Her kind and generous spirit will always be remembered.

Mary was born in Athens, OH to Matthew and Mary Suzannah Hawk. Her father was a WWI veteran and a mail carrier while her mother was an elementary teacher. She attended Ohio University where she played flute in the band, received her teaching degree, and met the love of her life, David E. Fenton. They were married there July 8, 1966 in Galbreath Chapel when Mary was 20.

To her husband David, she was the best wife ever. He called her his navigator and for 52 years, she kept him on the straight and narrow. Mary was a great mother to Cheri Suzanne and Diana Lynn and was always there to listen and help. However, her true calling was being a grandmother to Joshua Brain, Kristie Nicole, Katelynn Suzanne, Nicholas David, & Jacob Anthony. Her eyes lit up whenever she was with them. She was their costume maker, birthday cake baker (in any shape they asked for even a Big Mac), and the best playmate ever. Patiently teaching them how to find and hatch butterflies, make monster bubbles, and play the piano. She was also the number one spoiler, even cooking five different breakfasts when they came over at the same time. You would also find her smiling face at every school and sporting event.

Mary kept busy in the community. She was an elementary teacher for the Bloomfield-Mespo Schools for 25 years. There she shared her love of learning and passed on her perfect cursive writing, much to her despair, to many students that were not her daughters. Mary was also active in the Methodist Church, first in Shade (Athens), and then in N. Bloomfield. She was a Sunday School teacher, part of the Helping Hands Coat Ministry, and a member of the United Methodist Women. After retirement, she joined the Red Hats where she had a lot of fun and made many good friends.

Mary’s hobbies included reading, sewing, baking, and golfing. She was also a great collector who could never pass up a good sales pitch. Her family’s favorite purchases were the unicycle and accordian that she bought at the same garage sale. They always hoped to see her do both things at the same time.

Mary is survived by husband David; daughters Cheri (Bill) Chilson, Diana (Brian) Sly; grandchildren, Jess, Josh & Kristie Sly, Katie, Nick, & Jake Chilson; brother Charles (Lucy) Hawk; in-laws Tom (Darlene) Fenton, Sandra Budziak, Valerie (Jim) Putko; as well as many other loving family members. Mary was also the pet-mother to a monster cat named Diablo that she rescued when he was two days old. He has heartbrokenly continued to search the house for her since her passing. She was preceded in death by an infant son; her parents; mother & father-in-law; brothers Lewis and Donald Hawk; and brother-in-law Larry Fenton.
