William L. Campbell, 91, of Burton (formerly a 60 year resident of Chesterland), passed away peacefully Sunday morning, December 17th, 2017. He was born in Cleveland, OH on April 18th, 1926 to the late Earl and Rose (Montgomery) Campbell. He later married Dorothy Vargo in 1953.

He was a WWII U.S. Navy Veteran who served on the U.S.S. Herbert C. Jones (DE-137) in the South Pacific. William also boxed for the U.S. Navy and won a Golden Glove Championship. After returning home, he worked for 40 years as a Field Engineer for the Burroughs (Unysis) Corporation until his retirement. William continued to remain active as he played baseball well into his 40s and was also an avid golfer, playing into his mid 80s. He also enjoyed bowling, playing cards, and dancing with Dorothy. He also served many years as an Usher for St. Anselm Church in Chesterland. William's true love though was enjoying each and every day with his beloved wife, Dorothy, and his family.

William will be greatly missed by: his loving wife of 64 years, Dorothy; daughters, Kathleen (Kenny) Hoar, Laura (Tom) Ross, Patricia (Raymond) Loomis, Jane (William) Heiden; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Robert Campbell; and sister, Doris Turner. 

A MEMORIAL MASS WILL BE HELD AT 11:00 A.M., SATURDAY, DECEMBER 23RD, 2017, AT ST. HELEN'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 12060 KINSMAN RD., NEWBURY, OH 44065. A private burial in Chester Twp Cemetery will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in William's memory are requested to be made to: Foundation Fighting Blindness, 7168 Columbia Gateway Dr., Suite 100, Columbia, MD 21046 or the American Cancer Society, Ohio Division, North Region, 10501 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH 44106.
